Statesville, NC

Statesville is a city in and county seat of Iredell County, North Carolina. In 1753, German Lutherans and Scots-Irish Presbyterians began arriving at the now Statesville area. They moved from Pennsylvania to here to plant crops in fertile soil and because there was plenty of water and game to hunt. The settlement they created was then called Fourth Creek Congregation. Then in 1755, colonial governor Arthur Dobbs authorized the construction of the colony’s frontier fort located about 3 miles north of the settlement. Fort Dobbs combined the functions of a military barracks, fortification, refuge for settlers, and provisioning depot. In 1788, the state legislature divided Rowan County and named the new county Iredell County, which is where Fourth Creek Congregation was located. A year later, a county seat was chosen, it was the Fourth Creek Congregation, and its name was changed to “Statesville”.

Today, the city has grown from its humble roots to be the home of over 27,000 people.
